Back to all projectsConcept: creation of 100 apartment units on the plot of a 4-star Balaton beachside hotel. Our Office won a shared first place on a tender by invite, with 12 participants. The implementation of the project was unfortunately blocked due to the financial crisis in 2008. The plot of the spa and wellness hotel is located near the Port of Siofok, and is habituated by precious old-growth trees. The developer required the design of 100 apartments, 60m2 (living+bedroom), 80m2 (living+2bedrooms, 120m2 (living+3 bedrooms) units, with above ground parking and inner driveways. There were to be a maximum of 3 living units with in one building. These requirements – i.e. 30-35 stand alone buildings with connecting driveways and above ground parking – would have required the cutting down of almost 100% of the precious trees, which we would have deeply regretted. Our concept could find a solution to the developers need set forth in the design plan, simultaneously preserving at least 50% of the precious vegetation, as follows: we lined up the units in a wave shape, organizing the inner driveway in line with the building and putting parking places under the buildings – by lifting out the buildings to stand on legs – and minimally sinking the parking spaces, while the level was still above the Lake’s ground level.
